OUR STORY

A Movement Founder, Steve Stollman
OUR STORY

A Movement was born out of a necessity for sustainable, community-driven solutions to transportation challenges faced by many in urban and rural environments. Our journey began when Steve Stollman, a visionary entrepreneur, started his first pedicab business, “Serious Transportation,” in New York City over 30 years ago. Steve’s experience in the pedicab industry opened his eyes to the myriad of opportunities for innovation within human-powered transport. He recognized that while pedicabs had primarily served as a tourist attraction, they could become a viable solution for daily commuting, cargo transport, and wheelchair accessibility. As he continued to design and construct new prototypes for the evolving transportation landscape, he was driven by the belief that local communities possess the creativity and resources to build their own solutions.

Since our inception, A Movement has been working to cultivate a growing network of makers, engineers, students, and changemakers from diverse backgrounds. We want to build a community of likeminded people who share a vision of transforming transportation in a way that enhances lives and protects our environment.

Our intention is to stimulate local pursuit of the benefits that exist within reach. The materials, skills, and technology necessary to develop innovative human-powered and electric-assist designs are available worldwide. Yet, historically, there has been little effort to maximize the potential of these technologies, particularly in less-developed regions. We recognize the importance of addressing these gaps, especially as small, powerful electric motors and lightweight lithium-ion batteries offer new opportunities for innovation.

By integrating the transport of people and goods—alongside accessible solutions for wheelchair users—we aim to alleviate the difficulties many face in their daily lives. Our movement acknowledges the small but growing proliferation of cargo bike designs that enhance functionality and comfort. However, we also see the need to modernize traditional designs like pedicabs, which have remained largely unchanged for over a century.

With our focus on community collaboration, we believe that artists, mechanics, and other local craftspeople can work together to reimagine public transport, inspiring collective, creative action. As we forge ahead, we invite you to join us in this journey. Together, we can innovate new people-moving solutions that not only address transportation challenges but also spark broader community engagement and improvement.

We recognize that the path to change is not without its challenges, particularly for those in the pedicab and cargo cycle industries, who often operate under stressful conditions and face significant barriers to progress. Our commitment is to bring these issues to the forefront of public discourse, fostering open and democratic conversations about the value of this industry and the necessity of improving working conditions for those who serve our communities.

At A Movement, we are excited to build a future where transportation is redefined through local ingenuity and collaboration. Join us as we create a world where every community has the tools and support they need to thrive.

OUR VISION AND MISSION

VISION

We envision a world where human-powered transport solutions, designed by local communities, address pressing urban challenges like congestion, pollution, and economic disparity. By enabling people to collaboratively design, manufacture, and use these vehicles, we aim to transform the way people think about mobility, innovation, and sustainability. This movement strives to create accessible, eco-friendly, and community-driven transportation systems that empower individuals and enhance local economies.

MISSION

A Movement’s mission is to foster decentralized innovation by encouraging communities around the world to design and develop human-powered transport solutions. We promote local production, shared ideas, and the development of safe, clean, and economical transport options. Our goal is to spark local creativity and entrepreneurship while encouraging the sharing of knowledge across geographic and cultural boundaries.

EMPOWERING COMMUNITIES THROUGH DECENTRALIZED COLLABORATION

At the core of A Movement is our decentralized structure. We do not intend to operate with a traditional, centralized hierarchy. Instead, we shall embrace a community-driven, horizontal approach that gives autonomy to every participant.

Here’s how it works:

  • No Central Governing Body: We shall operate as a global collective of makers, engineers, designers, and changemakers. No single person or organization will dictate the direction of the movement. This decentralized model allows for greater innovation and flexibility, as each community has the freedom to experiment and build based on their unique needs.
  • Local Ownership: Every project, whether it’s a cargo bike in Brazil or a solar-powered rickshaw in India, is owned and led by the local community. This fosters a deep sense of pride and commitment as communities take full ownership of the design, build, and deployment of their transport solutions.
  • Global Collaboration: While local ownership is key, collaboration is essential. Communities share ideas, resources, and successes with others around the world. This way, we leverage the power of the global network to learn, adapt, and improve. We want to build a community that is built on the principles of open-source innovation, meaning that designs and learnings are freely shared across borders.

DRIVING CHANGE THROUGH AMBITIOUS TARGETS

Although we are still in formative stages of the movement, we believe in the power of collaboration to be able to achieve clear and measurable goals that will help us track progress and inspire action:

Our goals are twofold—both short-term milestones that keep us moving forward and long-term vision that shapes the future of sustainable transportation.

  • Short-term Goals:
    • Recruit 20+ volunteers and partners to support the rollout of the movement strategy.
    • Engage 50+ communities in the design and prototyping process for human-powered vehicles.
    • Launch 200+ prototypes across different regions, providing low-cost and efficient transport solutions.
    • Set up at least 15 maker spaces in underserved regions, offering access to tools, training, and resources to support local innovation.
    • Conduct 10+ workshops and training sessions, empowering local leaders and makers with the skills needed to design and build sustainable vehicles.
  • Long-term Goals:
    • Reach 100+ communities globally with sustainable human-powered transport solutions.
    • Create 1,000+ fully operational vehicles, serving local communities and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
    • Achieve a measurable reduction in emissions in at least 10 urban centers, by promoting low-emission, human-powered transport alternatives.
    • Facilitate the establishment of community-owned manufacturing spaces, where vehicles are built, maintained, and adapted by local makers for local use.

WHY IT MATTERS

The need for sustainable transport solutions is greater than ever. In many parts of the world, the cost of motorized transport is rising, pollution levels are skyrocketing, and access to reliable transportation is a barrier to economic growth and personal freedom.

By empowering communities to take control of their transportation needs, A Movement offers a path to:

  • Sustainability: Reducing emissions and dependence on fossil fuels.
  • Affordability: Creating transport solutions that are accessible to all, regardless of income level.
  • Community Empowerment: Fostering local innovation, ownership, and economic opportunities.

We believe that the future of transportation is human-powered. With your support, we can build a movement that transforms lives, economies, and the environment.
